Start selling in NZ, then enable overseas sales when you’re ready—with supported currencies and the relevant tax setup.
Keep your business country set to where your business is based. A buyer’s selected country and payment currency do not establish their tax residence or change yours.
International selling starts off. If your workspace offers it, review Settings → Business → Tax & selling regions before enabling it. Confirm your GST status and any registrations needed where you intend to sell. If your account uses the NZ-only checkout, contact support to review your options before accepting overseas orders.
Keep an eligible product priced in NZD or choose another supported currency when creating it. A buyer currency menu requires a paid account, an active Airwallex connection selected for card payments, currency choice enabled and supported currencies configured. Trials and cart offers do not show this menu.
The checkout may suggest a supported currency from its country field. Buyers can correct the country and choose a currency themselves; their manual currency choice takes priority. These suggestions do not verify tax residence.
Payment and settlement currencies can differ. Check provider processing, settlement and conversion fees before setting prices. A 0% GoCushy platform fee does not remove provider fees. See how currency choices work.
For a GST-registered NZ business, qualifying exports may be zero-rated. For remote services, the customer’s residence and circumstances of supply matter. Goods have separate export requirements, and some services connected with New Zealand are treated differently.
Keep evidence supporting the treatment you apply; an overseas address, selected country or currency alone is not a blanket exemption. Read IRD’s zero-rated supplies guidance.
Overseas GST, VAT or sales-tax obligations need a separate assessment. Where you use GoCushy’s Stripe Tax calculation, configure the registrations your business actually holds and verify the checkout result. GoCushy does not register your business, file returns or promise compliance in every country.
Use Orders → Manage to find the payment reference and provider link where available. A paid order records the purchase; provider settlement and payout records show what became available and what reached your bank.
Retain invoices, customer/export evidence, provider fees, settlement records and refunds. Foreign-currency tax figures need conversion to NZD with records of the exchange rate used. Tax records generally need keeping for at least seven tax years. See IRD’s currency guidance and record-keeping requirements.
Check the provider’s refund status and currency. Conversion on a refund can differ from the original payment; reconcile refunds and fees against the provider record. Airwallex explains payment and refund FX.
Review an example checkout for each intended market. Confirm its currency, tax, total and delivery terms. Ask your accountant about your circumstances if the treatment is unclear.
